Adam Mbowe
Adam Mbowe (She/her) is a Gambian, Canadian artist, and filmmaker based in Montreal. Her work takes a multimedia approach, drawing together broad themes of oppression and intersectionality with a particular emphasis on people and geography. This tends to manifest across a varied body of moving-image productions. She blends elements of documentary and fiction, cinema, and video art. Her broader themes are in the subtleties of everyday life, exploring ordinary people’s struggles and dreams and rooting the sociopolitical into the physical experience. Her inspiration is found in the real-life stories of people she encounters – those in my immediate circle or those she meets waiting in line at the grocery store or the bus stop. This approach tends to produce works that combine scripted and improvisatory scenes. Her work explores the gray area between fact and fiction, acknowledging and representing histories that blur the boundaries between traditional notions of narrative, experimental, and documentary cinema.
